چکیده
Abstract Background Three stages of basalt weathering are known: early or incipient weathering, intermediate and advanced weathering. The Late Oligocene Gebel Qatrani in Fayum Depression, Egypt, shows signs particularly exhibited spheroids found at the top flow. present paper gives results detailed petrographical, mineralogical geochemical study these spheroids. Results core-stones composed phenocrystals plagioclase feldspars clinopyroxenes set a groundmass tiny pyroxenes, relatively altered olivine opaque minerals. is subalkali (tholeiitic). outer weathered shells surrounding partly pyroxenes. calculated indices show that there marked trend from to shells. chemical mobility elements depletion Mg, Ca, Na K due olivine, pyroxene feldspars. trace Rb, Sr, Ni, V, Cr Zn also depleted. Conclusions Qatrani, type. degree corresponding indicates occurred under predominantly semiarid arid conditions.

Basalt weathering across scales
Weathering of silicate minerals impacts many geological and ecological processes. For example, the weathering of basalt contributes significantly to consumption of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) and must be included in global calculations of such consumption over geological timeframes. Here we compare weathering advance rates for basalt (wD β ), where D and β indicate the scale at which the r...
متن کاملThe oldest and youngest records of afrosoricid placentals from the Fayum Depression of northern Egypt
Tenrecs (Tenrecoidea) and golden moles (Chrysochloroidea) are among the most enigmatic mammals alive today. Mo− lecular data strongly support their inclusion in the morphologically diverse clade Afrotheria, and suggest that the two lineages split near the K−T boundary, but the only undoubted fossil representatives of each superfamily are from early Miocene (~20 Ma) deposits in East Africa. A re...
متن کاملAge of the earliest african anthropoids.
The earliest fossil record of African anthropoid primates (monkeys and apes) comes from the Jebel Qatrani Formation in the Fayum depression of Egypt. Reevaluation of both geologic and faunal evidence indicates that this formation was deposited in the early part of the Oligocene Epoch, more than 31 million years ago, earlier than previous estimates. The great antiquity of the fossil higher prima...
متن کاملMolecular Identification of Falciparum Malaria and Human Tuberculosis Co-Infections in Mummies from the Fayum Depression (Lower Egypt)
Due to the presence of the lake Quarun and to the particular nature of its irrigation system, it has been speculated that the Fayum, a large depression 80 kilometers south-west of modern Cairo, was exposed to the hazards of malaria in historic times. Similarly, it has been speculated that, in the same area, also human tuberculosis might have been far more widespread in the antiquity than in its...
متن کاملDentition of Proteopithecus sylviae, an archaic anthropoid from the Fayum, Egypt.
Proteopithecus sylviae is an archaic anthropoid from the late Eocene quarry L-41, Fayum Province, Egypt. The dentition of Proteopithecus is very primitive and does not closely resemble that of other, better known, primates from the Fayum (e.g., parapithecids and propliopithecids). The dental morphology, much of which is described herein, shows a platyrrhine-like level of organization, suggestin...
